Coudray paints from a treasured place within when she is in a garden setting. Early in her childhood, Coudray followed her father around picking mushrooms in the fields, tilling the soil in the backyard and gathering white butter clams along the shoals of Balboa Island and Newport Beach Peninsula. She holds fond memories of fishing off the Newport Beach Pier with her father before railings existed— standing behind him for hours with her hand placed on his shoulder as to remind him that she was safe and near. They would then return home to prepare a French chef cuisine. Harvest from their garden was picked daily and underwent significant preparation in the home. By capturing today’s gardens and harvest, Coudray creates a visual reminder of what was, elevating these images beyond common observation.
